The wooden bridge leads over the Wiener Neustadt Canal. The canal was once an important waterway for transporting wood, bricks and coal from the area south of the Danube to Vienna. The more than 60-kilometer-long waterway was put into operation in 1803.

The Pionier-Steg is a historic wooden bridge that crosses the Wiener Neustädter Canal in Wiener Neustadt. Today, it primarily serves as a popular waypoint and crossing for walkers, runners, and cyclists on the surrounding routes, such as the EuroVelo 9. In its immediate vicinity, the canal, as a valuable industrial monument, bears witness to the former importance of this historic waterway for the transport of goods.
