The Heldenplatz in Vienna is not only a historically and politically important square, but also a frequent venue for current events. The square belongs to the Hofburg area and is connected to the Ballhausplatz. Other monuments include the Outer Castle Gate, which commemorates the soldiers of the Napoleonic Wars, and the Executive Monument: This was unveiled in 2002 and honors the executive officers (policemen and gendarmes) of Austria who were killed in the line of duty.

The outer Burgplatz is also called “Heldenplatz” because the statues of the heroic Austrian army commanders, Archduke Karl (since 1860) and Prince Eugen (since 1865), modeled by Fernkorn, are set up there.
