    Hiking

Colle della Gianna can be reached both from Pian del Re, in the Po Valley, and from the Barbara Lowrie refuge, in the Pellice Valley. From here the majestic view of Monviso invites you to stop for a contemplative break.

Trail V12 from Pian del Re to Colle della Gianna

    450m

Embark on a moderate hike along Trail V12, a 4.5-mile (7.3 km) journey that takes about 3 hours and 18 minutes to complete. You'll gain 1480 feet (451 metres) as you traverse from Pian del Re towards Colle della Gianna. The path starts wide and comfortable, leading you through beautiful alpine meadows with changing terrain of natural ground and gravel. Keep an eye out for marmots and birds, and enjoy continuous views of the majestic Monviso as you make your way past La Sellaccia. The experience offers a pleasant rhythm underfoot, making the ascent enjoyable.

To begin your adventure, head to Pian del Re, the starting point for this route. While Pian del Re offers parking, be aware there's a fee of around 15 Euros per day. An alternative is to park for free at Pian della Regina, though this might require a slightly different approach to the trailhead. Plan your start time to allow ample daylight for the 3-hour and 18-minute duration, especially if you want to linger at the summit views. Always check local conditions before you set out.

This trail is notable for its connection to the source of the River Po, Italy's longest river, which begins right at Pian del Re. As you reach Colle della Gianna, you'll be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views, often described as the best vantage point for Monviso, also known as the Stone King. This col also serves as a natural bridge, linking the Po valley with the neighboring Pellice valley, offering a unique perspective on two distinct Alpine worlds.
