This is a bomb crater from World War 2. It is thought that it's here either because it missed the Southampton docks, or it was targeting the camps that were scattered all over the New Forest in preparation for D-Day.

Today, it's blissfully peaceful here; it's hard to believe any fighting could have happened in the woodland's oasis of serenity.

Nearby is Ashley heath ww2 bombing range. the landscape is littered with craters. throughout the new forest leading up to the heath, there are many of these craters. created by misjudged dropped by Lancaster bombers. Tallboy and Grandslam were both tested and successfully dropped on the Heath.
