Trig point on The Roaches

Hiking

5.0

(644)

On the south west edge of the Peak District National Park lies the Roaches, an eye-catching ridgeline with sheer western cliffs and a summit at 1,657 feet (505 m). Thanks to the jagged escarpment, this is a fantastic place to explore as you get extraordinary views every step of the way.

The Roaches were, for a time, home to a small colony of wallabies, released into the wild in the early 20th century. Peregrine falcons also breed in the rocks and, in Doxsey Pool along the ridgeline, is said to live a mermaid by the name of Jenny Greenteeth.

Majestic Peak views and jagged cliff edges

You can reach the ridgeline from the north or the south, a choice largely made by how long you’d like to be out for. There’s a car park immediately south of the ridge, next to the fault between the Roaches and Hen Cloud, an isolated edge. From here, there are several paths you can take up.

There’s also a car park to the north of Gradbach Hill where you can choose from many trails that meander south to the Roaches. The network of footpaths here means that you can start from almost anywhere and wend your way to the escarpment eventually. Once on the ridge, you’re greeted with exceptional views across the southern Peak District and down to Titttesworth Water, a large reservoir.

The rocky edge is what makes this truly spectacular though, and you can clamber over the immense boulders and traverse the escarpment to see it at a different angle with every step. Take care near the edge and ensure you’re prepared for any change in weather.

    Hiking

The Roaches in the Peak District are a dramatic gritstone ridge, attracting hikers and climbers with their rugged beauty. These rocky outcrops offer stunning views and challenging terrain, making them a popular destination.
It's a relatively easy climb to the top. It's also not too far from Lud's Church either. Check out the ice cream van on Roach Road near the squeeze stile wall if you fancy a hot beverage.
