The Saalen mermaid is reminiscent of the legend according to which the former castle lords liked to eat fish and therefore sent their servants to fish in the Saale. One day there was a rare large fish floundering on the fishing rod that had a crown on its back instead of a fin. The fish uttered such a shrill scream that the fisherman dropped the prey back into the water, fled and never fished in the Saale again.
