The Point Lookout loop from Black Mountain offers a difficult touring cycling challenge, delivering stunning Blue Ridge Mountain vistas for your effort. This 20.5-mile (33.0 km) route features 1607 feet (490 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 2 hours and 19 minutes. You'll cycle through lush hardwood forests, eventually reaching the iconic Point Lookout overlook, which provides sweeping views of the Royal Gorge and surrounding peaks.
Planning your ride requires considering the elevation. If you're looking for a significant workout, start from Old Fort to tackle the 900 to 1,000-foot climb over 3.6 miles. Alternatively, beginning at Ridgecrest offers a more downhill-oriented experience. The trail is paved and closed to motorized vehicles, making it a safe and enjoyable environment for touring cyclists, but be aware that parking for Black Mountain Point Lookout touring cycling can fill up.
This route holds significant historical value, following sections of the Old US Highway 70 and Old NC 10, which was once a vital transportation link. You'll also encounter fascinating 19th-century railroad tunnels and tracks, adding to the unique landmarks along the way. The Point Lookout loop is also part of the developing Fonta Flora State Trail, highlighting its importance in the regional trail network.
