The Lower Echo Lake – Watchung Reservation loop from Cranford offers a diverse road cycling experience through woodlands and along natural bodies of water. You'll wind past the lovely Echo Lakes and Lake Surprise, following streams like the Blue Brook, all within the vast Watchung Reservation. Expect varied terrain with significant elevation changes and hills, characteristic of the Watchung Mountains, making for an engaging ride through nature.

This moderate 52.9-mile (85.1 km) route, with 1747 feet (533 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 3 hours and 38 minutes to complete. Starting from Cranford, the route benefits from being part of an interconnected greenway, linking to Lenape Park and Rahway River Parkway corridors, which can offer stretches with reduced car traffic. While much of the route is well-paved, be aware that some segments might be unpaved, and biking on dirt trails within the reservation is generally not permitted.

The Watchung Reservation itself is a significant 1,945-acre natural preserve, originally designed by the Olmsted Brothers, known for their work on New York's Central Park. Beyond the scenic cycling, the reservation also encompasses historical sites like the Deserted Village of Feltville, accessible via its History Trail. This loop is a great way to explore the natural and historical richness of Union County by bike.
