The Breakheart Pond and Shelter Trail Loop offers a moderate hiking experience through a dense mix of hardwoods and evergreens. You'll find yourself immersed in a tranquil atmosphere as you navigate the varied terrain, which can be rocky and root-filled in places. A highlight is the picturesque 44-acre Breakheart Pond, surrounded by large white pine trees. This loop covers 6.7 miles (10.8 km) with an elevation gain of 421 feet (128 metres), typically taking around 2 hours and 54 minutes to complete. Expect some sections to be muddy after rain.
When planning your hike, be sure to wear sturdy boots; waterproof footwear is a good idea, especially if it has rained recently. Facilities are not available along the trail, so always bring your own water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. During hunting season, which runs from mid-September through February and again from late April through May, you should wear at least 200 square inches of solid daylight fluorescent orange for safety. This helps ensure you are visible to hunters in the Arcadia Management Area.
As you hike, keep an eye out for glimpses of the Wood River, which is particularly beautiful when the fall foliage is at its peak. The trail is part of the expansive Arcadia Management Area, a significant natural space. You might also spot local wildlife, such as white-tailed deer or various bird species, adding to the natural charm of your outing.
