The Ellwood Forest Park Loop offers a refreshing coastal walk through varied landscapes in Goleta, Santa Barbara County. You'll wander through fragrant eucalyptus groves and restored wetlands, eventually reaching stunning coastal bluffs with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. This easy 3.0 miles (4.8 km) loop involves a minimal 98 feet (30 metres) of elevation gain, making it a perfect 1 hours and 15 minutes outing for a relaxed day outdoors.
Parking is readily available, and the trail is known for being family-friendly and dog-friendly. If you're planning a visit, consider coming between November and February; this is when the area's eucalyptus groves become a significant wintering habitat for monarch butterflies, with peak numbers often seen in December. While generally flat, some sections near Devereux Beach can be rugged, and heavy rains might lead to uneven or wet surfaces.
This trail is part of the larger Ellwood Mesa Open Space preserve, a protected coastal area that's home to diverse wildlife and wildflowers. Beyond the monarch butterflies, you might spot various bird species in the restored wetlands of the North Campus Open Space. The bluffs also offer a unique vantage point for watching rocket launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base, adding an unexpected element to your hike.
