Sanderson Brook Falls – Sanderson Brook Falls loop from Westfield River Access

    280m

The Sanderson Brook Falls loop offers a delightful escape into nature, centered around the impressive 60-foot multi-tiered Sanderson Brook Falls. You'll experience a journey through varied terrain, from old gravel roads to winding singletrack, with sections that hug Sanderson Brook, creating an "enchanted forest" atmosphere. Expect frequent stream crossings and the chance for western-facing views towards the Westfield River valley, making this a rewarding moderate hike.

To access this 3.8-mile (6.2 km) loop, head to the large parking lot off Route 20 (Laurel Road) in Chester. While the full route involves 903 feet (275 metres) of elevation gain and takes about 2 hours and 2 minutes, a shorter out-and-back option to the falls is also available. The trail is dog-friendly, but be aware that some metal bridges might require carrying smaller dogs, and spring conditions can bring mud.

Nestled within the Chester-Blandford State Forest, this trail quickly leaves the noise of Route 20 behind, offering a peaceful experience. You can even find a swimming hole about 0.25 miles into the trail, a perfect spot to cool off on a warm day. The area also boasts a rich history, with structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) adding to its character.
