The Oak Savannah and Los Vaqueros Loop offers a dynamic hiking experience through Northern California's Diablo Range, showcasing rolling grasslands, oak-dotted glens, and chaparral-covered slopes. You'll find yourself on wide dirt paths that transition into surprisingly steep sections, especially along the Oak Savannah Trail as it descends into scenic valleys. The highlight is undoubtedly the panoramic views of the vast Los Vaqueros Reservoir, distant Mount Diablo, and the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, providing a true sense of solitude.
This moderate 8.7-mile (14.0 km) hiking route involves a significant 1678 feet (512 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 4 hours and 20 minutes to complete. Be prepared for challenging climbs, particularly on the northern end of the Los Vaqueros Trail, and remember that much of the route is exposed, so sun protection is a must. A day-use fee is required for access, and mobile reception can be spotty, so plan your navigation ahead of time.
Beyond the stunning scenery, the area is a haven for wildlife, with frequent sightings of golden eagles, deer, and various birds of prey; keep an eye out for rattlesnakes in warmer months. The name "Los Vaqueros" itself hints at the region's rich 19th-century ranching heritage, adding a layer of historical context to your journey. Spring is ideal for wildflowers, but check for potential eagle nesting closures before you go.
