Embark on the Coniston and Windermere loop from Kendal for a difficult touring cycling adventure, covering 52.2 miles (84.0 km) with a significant 4244 feet (1293 metres) of elevation gain. This challenging route, typically completed in 5 hours and 50 minutes, offers diverse terrain from paved roads and gravel paths to some unpaved tracks. You'll cycle through lush woodlands, past tranquil tarns like Blelham Tarn, and enjoy views of Lake Windermere and Coniston Water, often with the Old Man of Coniston mountain in sight. The western shore of Windermere features newly created shared-use cycle paths, while other sections include quiet country lanes and public roads. Prepare for undulating roads and steep climbs, some reaching 22% gradients, but also rewarding descents and picturesque Lakeland scenery. You might encounter potholes on the east side of Coniston.
This route is considered hard and demands a very good level of fitness due to its length and considerable elevation changes. Be prepared for numerous steep climbs, some of which may require you to dismount and push your bike. While there are easier, family-friendly sections, particularly on newly created shared-use paths around the lakeshores, the overall journey is demanding. Plan your ride carefully, ensuring you have adequate supplies and are ready for varied surfaces, including some unpaved sections.
What makes this loop particularly notable is its clever linking of various cycling infrastructures, from quiet country lanes to sections of the National Cycle Network. You'll pass by or near significant Lake District landmarks and towns, including Wray Castle and Hawkshead. Depending on your chosen variant, you might even incorporate a crossing on the Windermere Ferry, offering unique perspectives of the lake. The combination of challenging climbs, tranquil lakeside stretches, and village passages provides a varied and memorable cycling experience.
