The Raccoon Mountain Reservoir loop offers a wonderfully accessible touring cycling experience, circling the summit of Raccoon Mountain on a paved road. You'll enjoy continuous, sweeping views of the 12-billion-gallon reservoir, the Tennessee River Gorge, and distant mountains, with glimpses of Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain from various points. The route is surrounded by mixed hardwood forests and grasslands, providing a serene backdrop for your ride.
Planning your visit is straightforward, as the loop is conveniently located just 15 minutes from downtown Chattanooga. While the 4.5-mile (7.3 km) route is easy with only 246 feet (75 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 28 minutes, be mindful that some sections of the paved road are shared with vehicle traffic. Restrooms and a trail map are available at the Laurel Point picnic area, making it a great spot to begin or end your ride.
What truly sets this route apart is its combination of ease and stunning panoramic views, especially for touring cyclists. Unlike the more challenging mountain biking singletracks on Raccoon Mountain, this loop provides a relaxed ride suitable for all skill levels. It's also a designated Wildlife Observation Area, offering a chance to spot local fauna, including bald eagles in winter, and you can visit the TVA Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Facility visitor center to learn about the hydroelectric project.
