Latterbarrow summit and tower

Hiking

5.0

(188)

Latterbarrow is a lovely hill above the picturesque village of Hawkshead in the south of the Lake District National Park. It is a pleasant hike from the village and rewards you with splendid views of Windermere and the fells of southern Lakeland. From this direction, the way up is steep and ascends pitched stone steps at one point.

Approaches from Claife Heights’ forest plantations are also very rewarding, especially when you emerge from the trees and are greeted with the views. It’s easy to link an outing to Latterbarrow with a visit to Wray Castle, a stunning Gothic Revival fortress with impressive turrets and towers that stands proud above the northern end of Windermere.

A wonderful little vantage in the southern Lake District

Hawkshead is the obvious base, though Claife Heights and Latterbarrow are also easily accessed by the Windermere ferry at Bowness. Any adventure in the national park that begins with a lake crossing is always enjoyable, giving you a new perspective of your chosen objective. This is an immensely popular part of the Lake District, so set off early or tackle the fell in the day’s waning hours if you’re seeking serenity.

Latterbarrow’s 803-foot (245 m) summit is adorned by a tall beacon, which is visible from quite a distance, beckoning you onwards to the top. The views really open out up here, with the fells of the Fairfield Horseshoe seen beautifully to the north beyond Ambleside. It’s also a good vantage point for the Langdale fells, seen over the broad top of Black Fell.
