Embark on the Monarch Crest and Fooses Creek Trail Loop for a difficult jogging adventure through high-alpine terrain. This challenging route spans 15.6 miles (25.1 km) and features a significant elevation gain of 2630 feet (802 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 34 minutes to complete. As you jog, you will experience diverse landscapes, from lush forests and alpine tundra to open slopes and meadows near the treeline, often with wildflower-covered singletrack and picturesque beaver ponds along the way. Look out for prominent peaks like Chipeta Mountain and Mt. Ouray offering panoramic vistas.
Before you head out, be aware that snow can linger on parts of the trail until early July, so always check current conditions. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains, so plan your start time accordingly. It is also highly recommended to spend a day or two acclimating to the high altitude before attempting this route. Remember that this is a multi-use path, so please be courteous to mountain bikers, hikers, and other users you might encounter.
This high-alpine trail offers a truly unique experience, with much of the jogging taking place above 12,000 feet. The Monarch Crest section is particularly known for its expansive, open views. The combination of demanding climbs and stunning natural beauty makes this loop a standout option for experienced trail runners seeking a memorable outing in the San Isabel National Forest.
