    Hiking

The Kennet and Avon canal is 87 miles long. It connects the River Avon at Bath with the River Thames in Reading.

This section, like most of the canal path, is a well surfaced and flat trail, and incredibly scenic, too.

Giant's Grave hillfort & Kennett and Avon Canal loop — North Wessex Downs

    7.88km

    120m

Embark on a moderate 4.9-mile (7.9 km) hike through the North Wessex Downs, a journey that blends tranquil waterside paths with challenging hill climbs. This loop, typically taking around 2 hours and 9 minutes, begins along the flat, well-surfaced towpath of the Kennet and Avon Canal, offering peaceful views of the water and surrounding countryside. You will then ascend towards the historic Giant's Grave hillfort, a climb that is long, steep, and can be muddy in places. From the summit of this Iron Age fort, you'll be rewarded with panoramic vistas across the Vale of Pewsey and the North Wessex Downs, gaining 390 feet (119 metres) in elevation. The descent can be steep before you rejoin the canal.

While the research mentions a longer 8.8-mile loop from Pewsey Wharf, this specific route is shorter and more focused. Be prepared for the steep ascent and descent to the hillfort; good fitness and sure-footedness are essential for this section. If the weather has been wet, consider bringing a hiking pole to help with potentially muddy and uneven paths. Always check local conditions before you head out, especially regarding trail surface and visibility from the hillfort.

This trail offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The Giant's Grave hillfort is an Iron Age promontory fort, not a burial mound, and sits on Martinsell Hill, the third highest point in Wiltshire. It provides commanding views and was likely a settlement or refuge. The route also incorporates a section of the historic Kennet and Avon Canal, built between 1794 and 1810, offering a peaceful contrast to the hill climb.
