Klosterburg or Burgkloster? The question arises, if one stands before it. Defiant and powerful, this ensemble, which can not be overseen at all, rises and loses itself in corridors, courtyards, corners and angles, and at second glance looks even more like a castle than a monastery.

The castle monastery, founded in 1227, is the most important preserved medieval monastery complex in northern Germany.
Today the Kulturforum Burgkloster with the Museum of Archeology is a place of lively discussion with permanent and changing exhibitions on archeology, the history of the Hanseatic League and the Baltic Sea region, contemporary history as well as visual arts and cultural history.
Particularly impressive are the vault paintings restored in the castle monastery.
From the observation deck of the castle monastery you have a beautiful view of the Untertrave and the middle castle gate.
