Neuhaus am Rennweg was the highest district town in the GDR and seems a bit empty today. 🤷♂️ You can't really call it a lively center.
The train station is the highest in Thuringia at 830 m.

The city is located in the Thuringian Slate Mountains, directly on the Rennsteig, here called Rennweg. Neuhaus is one of the highest places in Thuringia. When Neuhaus was a district town, it was considered the highest county seat of the GDR. The part south of the Rennsteig is dewatered to the Steinach, while the northern part lies in the catchment area of the Schwarza (Wikipedia).
