Challenge yourself on the Savage Alpine Trail Loop, a difficult jogging route that takes you through the varied landscapes of Denali National Park. You will cover 6.5 miles (10.5 km) and ascend a significant 1507 feet (459 metres), a workout that typically takes around 1 hour and 22 minutes to complete. As you climb, you will jog across open tundra meadows, offering continuous views of the Alaska Range and the Savage River valley, with the chance to spot Denali itself from the ridge on a clear day.
When planning your visit, be aware that snow can linger on the trail into June, and winter conditions might require crampons due to ice. You can access the trailhead by personal vehicle within the first 15 miles of Denali Park Road. During the summer months, a free shuttle service is available, which you might consider for point-to-point options if you prefer not to complete the full loop.
This route is particularly rewarding for experienced joggers looking for a strenuous outing within Denali. Beyond the panoramic views, the trail also descends into beautiful cottonwood and spruce forests at lower elevations, which are especially vibrant during the fall foliage season. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, as caribou, moose, and Dall sheep are often seen along the way, adding to the unique experience of this Alaskan wilderness.
