    Hiking

Puʻu O Hulu Trail is known by many people under its unofficial name 'Pink Pillbox Hike'. The last section of the trail, leading up the mountain of PuʻUʻOhulu Kai, includes multiple pillboxes (old military bunkers). One of them is painted pink to raise awareness for breast cancer and became the unofficial namesake of the trail.

The Pink Pillbox Hike, also known as the Puʻu O Hulu Trail, offers a quick but rewarding adventure on Oʻahu's west side. You'll climb a short, steep path with switchbacks, often over rocky terrain and loose dirt, to reach the iconic World War II-era pillboxes. From these historic structures, you're treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Waianae Mountain Range, and the surrounding valleys, including Nanakuli. The landscape, while often dry, can be lush in winter, and you might even spot mountain goats.

Planning your visit means preparing for an exposed trail with little shade; sun protection and plenty of water are essential. The 1.4-mile (2.2 km) route involves 547 feet (167 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 52 minutes, and is rated easy, though the steepness and potentially slippery sections mean trekking poles can be useful, especially on the descent. It's a fantastic option for a quick hike, and many consider it a prime spot for watching the sunset over the Waiʻanae Mountains.

This trail stands out as a less crowded alternative to some of Oʻahu's more popular routes, offering a unique blend of history and natural beauty. The famous pink pillbox, painted for breast cancer awareness, adds a distinctive charm, often adorned with colorful graffiti art. It's a great choice if you're seeking stunning coastal vistas and a touch of local history without committing to a full-day trek.
