Embark on a moderate hike to the Cascate del Marmarico, Southern Italy's highest waterfall, nestled within the Parco delle Serre. This 7.0-mile (11.3 km) route from the Guida Hydroelectric Plant takes you through lush Mediterranean vegetation, ancient beech and holm oak forests, and past rocky ridges and clear streams. You will gain about 1505 feet (459 metres) in elevation over approximately 3 hours and 32 minutes, experiencing diverse terrain that includes unpaved roads and rugged paths, all leading to picturesque views.
When planning your visit, be aware that while the trail is generally moderate, some sections can be challenging, so wear appropriate footwear. The most popular starting point is the Guida Hydroelectric Plant. If you prefer a shorter trek, a 4x4 shuttle service is available from Bivongi to cover a significant portion of the steep dirt track, leaving you with a shorter 20-30 minute walk through the forest to reach the falls. This option can make the journey more accessible.
The highlight of this trail is the impressive Cascate del Marmarico, boasting a 114-meter drop with three main sections. At the base, you will find a small, crystal-clear bathing lake, perfect for a refreshing swim, especially during warmer months. The name "Marmarico" itself suggests a "slow" or "heavy" flow, an optical illusion given the waterfall's continuous descent. This trail offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich biodiversity of the Calabrian Apennines.
