A jewel that has not yet been discovered by mass tourism is the Nemitzer Heide located in the Elbe Heights-Wendland Nature Park. After a devastating forest fire in 1975 and the destruction of extensive pine forests, a magnificent heathland has developed on the very dry and nutrient-poor sandy soils. Many protected plants and animals have found their habitat here on 1061ha. For the promotion and conservation of the species and their habitats, this area has been designated as an FFH and EU bird sanctuary.
