Hiking

The Kanaalkom is an inland port that opened in 1854, along with the Kempen Canal, which connected Hasselt to Antwerp. The canal was very important for the gin industry, for example, for the import of grain.
Several industries developed along this dock, such as a gelatin factory, whose chimney is still visible. On the right side of the canal basin lies the Volkstehuis (People's House), built in 1950. Originally, it housed alcoholics for detoxification, but today it provides shelter for homeless men.
