The west side of Westchester Lagoon gets most of the attention, probably because it has lots of parking. But this side is pretty too, with ties into the Chester Creek Trail and the surprisingly pretty paved trail alongside Spenard Road.

This feels like a safe place to bike during the day, but I'd be a bit more cautious about coming here at night, especially if you're alone.

The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail – Westchester Lagoon loop from Kincaid Park offers a unique blend of urban cycling and Alaskan wilderness. This paved route takes you along the coast, providing panoramic views of the Chugach Mountains and Cook Inlet. You'll cycle through areas known for moose sightings, especially near Kincaid Park, and pass by Westchester Lagoon, a popular spot for birdwatching. Expect rolling terrain with some significant hills, particularly around the Kincaid Park end, making it a moderate challenge for touring cyclists.

This 25.9-mile (41.7 km) loop, with 792 feet (241 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes about 2 hours and 29 minutes to complete. Parking is readily available at Kincaid Park, which serves as an excellent starting point. The trail is well-maintained and features "Fix-It Stations" are located at various points, including Kincaid Park and Westchester Lagoon, for any minor bike adjustments you might need. It's a popular route, so an early start is recommended if you prefer a quieter ride.

Often called the "crown jewel" of Anchorage trails, this route is part of the larger 32-mile "Moose Loop" network and is used year-round. Beyond the stunning coastal scenery, you'll get unique views of low-flying aircraft near the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and can visit Earthquake Park, which features exhibits on the 1964 earthquake. On clear days, you might even spot Mount Susitna or Denali in the distance, adding to the trail's appeal as one of the best cycling trails Anchorage Alaska has to offer.
