    Gravel riding

Impressive tunnels, trenches, and embankments along this former railway, now a cycle-pedestrian path. Not to mention the always beautiful views of the Rosandra Valley in every season. Be careful when the Bora wind blows, it's really tough going

Val Rosandra Circular Trail from Former Gabrio Modugno Station

Embark on the Val Rosandra Circular Trail, a moderate hike that takes you through a unique landscape where Mediterranean plants meet alpine terrain. This 6.2-mile (10.0 km) loop involves a total ascent of 1307 feet (398 metres) and typically takes around 3 hours and 26 minutes to complete. You will walk through beautiful deciduous forests and along historic railway paths, catching glimpses of the Rosandra Waterfall cascading down limestone cliffs and reaching Monte Stena Summit for views of Trieste and the sea.

To start your hike, head to the former Gabrio Modugno Station. You can easily reach the trailhead by taking buses 40 or 41 directly from Trieste's railway station. The nearby hamlets of Bottazzo and Bagnoli della Rosandra offer convenient options for bars, restaurants, and places to stay, making it simple to extend your visit with local food after your adventure.

This route is rich in history, following sections of the historic Giordano Cottur Cycle Path, which was once the Trieste-Erpelle Cosina railroad. You will encounter old railway tunnels carved into the rock and pass the remains of a Roman aqueduct. The trail also incorporates parts of the ancient "Via del sale" (Salt Route), a path once used by donkey caravans for trade between the Karst plateau and the sea, offering a glimpse into the region's past.
