Since 2004, the Heisinger Ruhrauen have been forming a nature reserve of about 150 hectares. Here there is an intact floodplain landscape with regular flooding as well as a multitude of wetland biotopes, which were created by subsidence. There are about 60 breeding and up to 50 guest bird species living in the entire nature reserve, as well as rare species of dragonflies and amphibians. To preserve biodiversity, ponds are detoxified and expanded, meadows mowed and bank shrubs planted.
