    Running

The Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail is a super popular biking, walking, and running trail spanning from Albany to Voorheesville. This is a great trail for longer, flatter runs (or really runs of any distance since it is an out-and-back trail), and you can choose whether you want to stay on the paved path or branch off on some of the dirt trails.

The Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail offers a unique jogging experience, tracing the historic path of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad through a blend of urban, suburban, and natural scenery. You'll glide over mostly paved asphalt, passing through woodlands and open fields, with notable features like picturesque bridges and the impressive Normanskill Gorge. Despite its generally flat profile, the 18.0-mile (28.9 km) distance and 408 feet (124 metres) of elevation gain contribute to its difficult rating, making it a rewarding challenge for dedicated joggers.

Planning your visit is straightforward, with multiple access points and parking lots conveniently located in towns like Albany, Delmar, and Voorheesville. Some of these spots even include amenities such as restrooms and bike stations, ensuring a comfortable start and finish to your run. While the trail is open year-round, consider an early morning start to avoid peak times and enjoy the cooler air, especially if you're aiming to complete the full 3 hours and 8 minutes journey.

This trail isn't just a jogging route; it's a vital community connector, linking several towns and serving as a key part of the larger Empire State Trail system. Its historical significance as a former rail bed adds an interesting layer to your run, and you might even spot local wildlife like deer or turkeys. The trail's commitment to public art, overseen by the "Art on the Rail Trail" committee, also means you'll encounter unique installations along your way, adding an unexpected cultural element to your outdoor activity.
