Between Borgharen and Maasbracht you regularly cycle along the Juliana Canal. This branch of the Meuse was opened in 1935 to provide access to the Liège coal mines, among other things. The Meuse was difficult to navigate on this route and was also on the border with Belgium, which did not want to participate in the canalisation. Then just a channel on their own territory, one must have thought. Nowadays you mainly see a lot of gravel ships passing by here.
