Embark on the Painted Hills Trail to Triple Tree Trail, an easy 4.0 miles (6.5 km) hike connecting urban Bozeman with its mountain foothills. As you ascend, you will gain 574 feet (175 metres) in elevation over approximately 1 hour and 49 minutes, passing through diverse terrain including meadows and agricultural lands. Keep an eye out for abundant wildflowers, especially in spring, which are said to give the 'Painted Hills' their name.
This public route crosses private land, so remember to stay on the marked path, close any gates you encounter, and keep dogs leashed. Benches are strategically placed at viewpoints, particularly at the Triple Tree Trail summit, providing excellent spots to rest and enjoy the scenery. Be aware that sections of the trail can be muddy or icy during late fall and early spring.
Part of the Main Street to the Mountains system, this trail offers a convenient way to experience the local landscape without venturing far from town. The route culminates with sweeping panoramic views of the entire Gallatin Valley, its farmlands, and the town of Bozeman, making it a notable local outing.
