The Defynnog Yew might once have been used for gatherings and meetings. These were known in Wales as 'Cantrefi' / 'Hundreds'. 'Cantref Mawr' became the 'Hundred of Defynnog' and was known by this name between the 12th and 15th centuries. Defynnog was considered an important place, not the small village we see today.
Yew historian A. Meredith is convinced that it is a single tree. 'The Defynnog Yew, with a circumference of 40 feet, female, is probably 3,500 years old; it may be more than one yew, but they could all be part of an original tree.'
