Since the end of the Franco-Prussian War and the Peace of Frankfurt on May 10, 1871, Strasbourg became the capital of the imperial state of Alsace-Lorraine in the newly founded German Empire.
After the First World War, Alsace-Lorraine declared itself the independent Republic of Alsace-Lorraine, but was occupied by French troops within a few days. From November 11th to 22nd, 1918, a socialist council republic existed in Strasbourg.
Today, the name of one of the main streets, Rue du 22 novembre, commemorates their suppression. The city was then returned to France under the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
