Embark on the RSPB Balranald Nature Trail loop, an easy hike covering 3.5 miles (5.7 km) with a minimal elevation gain of 72 feet (22 metres), typically completed in about 1 hour and 27 minutes. This circular route on the Isle of North Uist takes you through varied landscapes, including uneven crofting land, stony and wet areas, and natural boulder fields. You will also discover beautiful sandy beaches, wind-sculpted sand dunes, and the unique wildflower-rich machair, all set against wild ocean vistas and vast skyscapes.
This trail is generally considered easy to average in difficulty and is mostly flat, making it suitable for most fitness levels. While parts of the route are accessible, be aware that the terrain can be uneven, with unpaved roads and narrow trails. The reserve also features a visitor centre, offering more information about the local wildlife and traditional crofting agriculture, enhancing your visit to this westernmost point of North Uist.
The RSPB Balranald Nature Trail is a crucial site for birdwatching, especially for the conservation of the endangered corncrake, which you might hear or even spot during summer. Keep an eye out for many other wading and farmland birds, such as Oystercatcher, Lapwing, and Skylark. The reserve is also managed to support insects like the great yellow bumblebee, and there is a chance to see otters, highlighting the rich biodiversity of this special area.
