The Renaissance building (1545) takes its name from the statues and masks traditionally said to have been erected by its former occupant, the bloodthirsty General Maarten van Rossum. He wanted to shock the officials, who refused to pave the steps of his staircase with gold. The general ordered the army of the Duke of Gelderland Karl von Egmont and was an opponent of Charles V. The house was restored in 1829. Formerly the town hall, it still contains some city offices. (Michelin)
