It was discovered in Quinta de São Gião, next to the dunes, 500 meters from the sea, by Eduíno Borges Garcia, in 1961. Attributed by some authors to the Visigoth period, and by others as having Asturian characteristics, it is considered one of the oldest Christian temples national territory, and even the Iberian Peninsula.
The Church of São Gião is classified as a Portuguese National Monument since 1986
