Elmar Hillebrand created great works, and the main altar in Cologne Cathedral is particularly well known. The well-known sculptor paid special attention to his home village of Weiß, where he lived for over 60 years. In addition to the turtle in front of the St. Georg daycare center, which is particularly popular with children for climbing, he had his Nepomuk figure, which stood at the cathedral before the war years, erected in 1978 on a wall with a view of the Rhine. Nepomuk stands there and watches, because he is known as the patron saint of boatmen, raftsmen and millers.

Hiking

The Nepomuk figure once adorned the facade of Cologne Cathedral. During the war, the statue was damaged and disposed of; the sculptor Elmar Hillebrand in Cologne-Weiß kept it. The gap in the cathedral facade was replaced by a copy.

"John Nepomuk lived from about 1350 to 1393. He died as punishment by being thrown from the Charles Bridge into the Vltava River and drowned. As a bridge saint, his statue stands on many bridges in Europe." (from the website of the Archdiocese of Cologne).
