Embark on the Mason Point Horse Trail loop, a moderate hike that takes you through mostly wooded terrain within the Jordan Game Land. This 9.7-mile (15.6 km) route features uneven ground and moderate inclines, with some sections presenting ankle-high vegetation. You will gain 212 feet (65 metres) in elevation over an estimated 3 hours and 59 minutes, offering a good workout. The trail provides access to Jordan Lake, allowing for scenic views of the water. Expect a peaceful journey through this vast nature preserve.
To reach the trailhead, you will drive about one mile on a gravel road leading to the main parking lot. Once on the Mason Point Horse Trail loop, you will find it well-marked with orange arrows or diamond blazes, ensuring clear navigation. For your safety, look out for 12 numbered yellow Emergency Location Markers along the way. Be aware that the trail may close if Jordan Lake's water level rises to 217 feet, a situation that has occurred in the past due to flooding. It is wise to check local conditions before heading out, especially after heavy rains.
This trail is part of the larger Jordan Game Land, a significant nature preserve that supports diverse wildlife. As you hike, you will be sharing the path with equestrians, so be mindful of horses and their riders. Hunters also use this area during specific seasons, adding another layer of awareness for visitors. The preserve's commitment to maintaining a natural environment makes this loop a valuable outdoor experience. It offers a chance to connect with nature in a shared-use setting.
