    Hiking

Good views provide a scenic starting point for this trail into the Bear Wallow Wilderness. The views extend as far as Mount Graham in the Pinaleno Range. This stunning panorama accompanies you much of the way down the steep switchbacks that begin the descent of the trail into a side drain of Bear Wallow Creek and eventually into the bottom of the canyon. Gobbler Point is the steepest trail leading into the desert.

Embark on the Gobbler Point Trail, a moderate hike spanning 5.9 miles (9.5 km) with a significant elevation gain of 1952 feet (595 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 3 hours and 25 minutes. The trail offers striking panoramic views, including Mount Graham visible from the trailhead. As you ascend, you will pass through diverse forest types, from mixed conifers and ponderosa pine to aspen groves in the higher elevations. The lower sections feature Gambel oak and bracken fern, creating a varied landscape.

Before you set out, be aware that the Gobbler Point Trail is situated within the Bear Wallow Wilderness. This area was impacted by the Wallow Fire in 2011, so some trails might not be fully maintained. You should check for potential hazards like falling trees, flooding, or burned-out stump holes. Always verify local conditions and seasonal considerations before your visit to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Beyond the immediate views, the trail provides excellent opportunities to observe the Black River drainage. You will also find a park-like community of ponderosa pines and canyon hardwoods near the junction with the Bear Wallow Trail. Keep an eye out for wildflowers throughout the season, adding to the natural beauty of this challenging route.

Embark on a challenging 14.8 miles (23.8 km) hike along Bear Wallow Trail #63, where you will gain 1987 feet (606 metres) in elevation over an estimated 6 hours and 54 minutes. This difficult route takes you through a unique streamside environment, where lush vegetation like alder, ash, and ferns thrives alongside towering pine and spruce trees. You will experience a true wilderness journey, with sections offering alpine forest views and remarkable vistas from the Mogollon Rim.

When planning your visit, be prepared for varied terrain, as the trail crosses Bear Wallow Creek multiple times, leading to rocky, wet, and boggy sections. Waterproof footwear and gaiters are highly recommended to keep you comfortable. Be aware that snow can persist in shady areas until May, and you should watch out for falling trees and burned-out stump holes from the Wallow Fire. Also, know that poison ivy is abundant along the route.

This trail offers a deep dive into an ecosystem shaped by both nature and past wildfires, providing a stark contrast between vibrant riparian areas and more open, fire-affected landscapes. The Bear Wallow Wilderness provides a rugged backdrop for your adventure, showcasing the resilience of the forest. If you plan to continue onto San Carlos Apache Reservation land, remember that a permit is required.
