The HJ van Heekplein was planned in the post-WWII reconstruction period. Due to the proximity of the border to Germany, many bomber crews already mistook Enschede for a German city and bombed it, which led to heavy destruction.
Today's modern appearance dates back to 2003, when the square was converted into a shopping square with international chains and the Klanderij-Twentec shopping center. There is a market here on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The square is named after Hendrik Jan van Heek (1814-1872), one of the founders of the Enschede textile industry.
