The city is remembered for the famous Battle of Palestro during the Second War of Independence. On May 30, 1859, Piedmontese troops, part of the army led by Napoleon III, occupied Palestro and Vinzaglio; the Austrians attacked on May 31, but were repulsed and forced to withdraw towards Robbio.

In Palestro on 30 and 31 May 1859 a pitched battle was held with the victory of the Franco-Piedmontese troops over the Austrians. Every year, on the last Sunday of May, the anniversary of the battle is celebrated at the Palestro ossuary.
