The community was founded by royally invited Huguenots, whose church was dedicated in 1736. The church building is shaped both inside and out by the Reformed doctrine: simplicity and harmony, with the word as the focus of church activity. Therefore the decoration is sparse and there is no altar but a communion table.
Above the old entrance to the church is a royal coat of arms, erected in gratitude for the royal family's support of the community. The Reformed Church has members inside and outside of Fredericia.

The Reformed, in contrast to the Catholics and the Jews, came to Fredericia as a united group, which had been specially invited by Frederik IV in 1719. In 1720, the first Reformed families settled in Fredericia, and a total of approx. 70 families to the city.
The Reformed were also called Calvinists or Huguenots. They belonged to a branch of Protestantism, which was inspired by the Reformers Jean Calvin and Ulrich Zwingli. The Huguenots lived mainly in otherwise Catholic France, but were persecuted and emigrated in the 1680s. The Huguenots, who came to Fredericia, had thus settled in Brandenburg.
