The Modoc Chief Kintpuash (aka "Captain Jack") took advantage of the rough terrain natural rock formations here to stage a defensive fortification in his effort to hold off white settlers during the Modoc Wars of 1872 and 1873.

There is also a trail junction here that shortens the loop significantly if you do not want to complete the entire hike.

Step back in time on the Captain Jack's Stronghold Outer Loop Trail, a truly unique hiking experience through a rugged volcanic landscape. You'll navigate twisted lava flows and natural rock formations, walking in the footsteps of history where the Modoc people once defended their stronghold. Keep an eye out for detailed lava formations and distant mountain views as you explore this stark, memorable terrain.

This easy 1.3-mile (2.1 km) loop, with a minimal 52 feet (16 metres) of elevation gain, takes approximately 33 minutes to complete, making it an accessible option for many. While the overall difficulty is easy, the uneven volcanic rock surface means sturdy, closed-toed shoes are a must. The trail is located within Lava Beds National Monument; remember that pets and bicycles are not allowed on the route.

What truly sets this trail apart is its profound historical significance as Captain Jack's Stronghold, a natural fortress used during the Modoc War. Interpretive signs along the path explain how the Modoc warriors utilized the lava beds' unique features for defense, offering a powerful connection to the past. You might even spot prayer ribbons or sage offerings near the medicine pole, reflecting the site's continued spiritual importance.
