The name of the moated castle is a mystery. Different etymological dictionaries give different meanings for the word pile. It could mean, among other things, foundation or depot, but also column or church tower. In 1134 Stapelen was called the Stapelo, so the name is old, but a good explanation seems to be hidden in the mists of time.

Many knights, counts and noble lords had fortified houses or fortresses in the Middle Ages. Especially in the Meierij there were hundreds of such castles. Only about 50 of these remain in North Brabant, including Heeswijk Castle in Heeswijk, Nemelaer Castle in Haaren and De Strijdhoef Castle in Udenhout. Each one is worth a visit.
