The Altare della Patria was built following a decision by the Italian Parliament to dedicate a national monument to the recently deceased king Vittorio Emanuele II (1878). After announcing two international competitions (1880 and 1882), the project presented by Giuseppe Sacconi was chosen. The young architect from the Marches, on the model of the great sanctuaries of the classical age, had conceived the space as a scenic representation that celebrated the Italian Risorgimento in the center of imperial Rome.
