Embark on the Petrified Forest Loop, a moderate 10.3-mile (16.6 km) hike through the rugged beauty of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This route offers a diverse experience, from sweeping vistas overlooking the Little Missouri River valley to the unique, eroded badland hills. You will spend about 4 hours and 27 minutes on the trail, gaining 644 feet (196 metres) as you traverse sections dense with ancient petrified wood and open prairie grasslands.

When planning your visit, remember that this is a remote backcountry trail with very little shade. Be sure to carry plenty of water and wear sun protection to stay comfortable. The trail can become quite slick and challenging after rain, so it is wise to check current conditions before you head out. Parking is conveniently available right at the Petrified Forest Loop Trailhead.

What makes this trail truly special is its geological significance, showcasing vast deposits of petrified wood, a defining feature of the park. As you explore, keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife, including bison, that roam these remote areas. The varied terrain and unique natural history make this loop a memorable journey into the heart of the badlands.
