Embark on the Summit Valley Trail, a moderate hike spanning 4.8 miles (7.8 km) with an elevation gain of 754 feet (230 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 2 hours and 18 minutes, enjoying diverse scenery as you go. The trail quickly leads to a ridge top, offering expansive views of Twin Peaks, Prescott Peak, and on clear days, even the Pacific Ocean.
When planning your visit, be aware that trailhead access may be limited by gate closures during the wet season, typically from mid-October through mid-June. Some sections of the trail can be dry, so plan to carry enough water, as there is no reliable source between Summit Valley and the South Kelsey Trail. Starting your hike early is a good idea, especially if you hope to spot local wildlife.
This route takes you through the heart of the Del Norte County wilderness within Six Rivers National Forest. You will discover mountain meadows that burst with wildflowers in late spring and dense canopies of Brewers Spruce and Western White Pine. Don't miss the 3-acre Summit Valley meadow, a perfect spot for a break, or the panoramic views from the site of the old Summit Valley Fire Lookout.
