Embark on the Lone Oak Trail, an easy hike covering 3.3 miles (5.2 km) with an elevation gain of 965 feet (294 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 1 hour and 50 minutes. The path begins alongside a small creek before you quickly ascend the mountain using a series of switchbacks. As you follow the ridge line, you'll encounter smaller bushes and trees, some visibly charred from a past fire. On clear days, this section offers views of Johnson City and the surrounding mountains. The trail eventually leads to the Tip Top overlook, the highest point of Buffalo Mountain, where you can enjoy views through the trees.

For your hike, trekking poles are a good idea, especially if you visit in early spring when some parts can be narrow, muddy, or slippery. The trail surface is mostly natural gravel and packed dirt, though you will find some rocky sections. Access to Buffalo Mountain Park is generally straightforward, making it easy to reach the trailhead. Plan your visit to make the most of the conditions.

This route is considered one of the best in the area due to its accessible difficulty and rewarding vistas. The presence of charred trees from a past fire means less shade during the day, but it also creates excellent opportunities for stargazing at night. Reaching the Tip Top overlook provides a sense of accomplishment, marking the highest point of Buffalo Mountain.
