The Luther monument in front of the church commemorates the protest in Speyer in 1529 and the beginnings of the Protestant faith: At the then Reichstag, 6 princes and 14 free imperial cities protested against the fact that the Catholic faith alone should apply in the German Empire and presented a protest letter. This is where the term “Protestant” comes from.
The Memorial Church is the "main church" of the Ev./Prot. Church in the Palatinate and is called “Retscherkirche” by the locals.
