The Schaal monument commemorates forester A.F. Schaal, who managed the Olbernhau district between 1865 and 1894. He was particularly committed to preserving and expanding the copper beech population and was known as a recognized expert on the tree species in the Ore Mountains. His research showed that the firs in the district were among the strongest in Germany. The average trunk mass of 261 old firs recorded was 21.62 cubic meters.
