The two lakes, Poppelsee and Kaltenbachsee, are rafting lakes from the past. They were built by the Enztal raftsmen around 1750 and had an important function at the time due to their large amounts of water.
The dammed lakes used to be used to bring the tree trunks tied together into rafts down the valley and on via the Enz, Neckar and Rhine to a destination in the Netherlands. The two rafting lakes are now a real idyll and a worthwhile destination for hikers. The waters can be circumnavigated on narrow paths.

The large Enz is fed by the Kaltenbachsee and Poppelsee. In the days of rafting, they served as reservoirs to raise the water level on the Great Enz so that the wood could be transported by water.
